## Biography

Jennifer Jones (born Phylis Lee Isley) was an American actress. She began her career in bit parts under her birth name before being signed by producer David O. Selznick, who gave her the stage name Jennifer Jones. She made her first leading appearance as Bernadette Soubirous in *The Song of Bernadette* (1943).

For that performance she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. She received a further Academy Award nomination for her role as Jane Hilton in *Since You Went Away* (1944). Jones appeared in many other films including *Duel in the Sun* (1946), *Portrait of Jennie* (1948) and *Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing* (1955). She was also known as Jennifer Jones Simon.
