## Fi1m on Jennifer Peedom

> Jennifer Peedom points the camera at the end of the rope that does the carrying. It made *Sherpa* the most useful film about Everest we have seen, and the fairness that lets her do it also stops her, now and then, from saying what she plainly thinks.

Peedom went to Everest in the spring of 2014 to make a film about work. Her subject was Phurba Tashi, twenty-one times to the summit, leading the Sherpa team that carries Russell Brice's paying clients up the mountain, and the idea was simple: film the season from the end of the rope nobody films. She had been on the mountain for the best part of a decade by then, as a camera operator on *Everest: Beyond the Limit* (2006) and directing *Miracle on Everest* (2008), and she had got, in her words, "so sick of watching sherpas end up on the cutting room floor and people not seeing how they work." Then, on 18 April, a block of ice fell into the Khumbu Icefall and killed sixteen men, and she was the only filmmaker on the mountain whom the Sherpas trusted enough to keep filming.

That trust is her method, and it took years to build. Her first feature, *Solo* (2008), co-directed with David Michôd, followed an Australian adventurer's fatal attempt at a solo kayak crossing, and it set the pattern: extreme endeavour, and the bill for it. After *Sherpa* (2015) she went somewhere gentler. *Mountain* (2017) and *River* (2021, co-directed with Joseph Nizeti) are concert films more than documentaries, Renan Ozturk's high-altitude footage cut to Richard Tognetti and the Australian Chamber Orchestra, with Willem Dafoe reading Robert Macfarlane. We have not reviewed either and will not judge them at length. We will say that the thing we value in her is people with something to lose, and those films by design have very few.

What makes *Sherpa* better than every climbing film before it is that it is on the Sherpas' side and still gives Brice a hearing. He has built a business on these men, he cares about them, and he does not understand what they are asking for when they begin to ask. We were angrier at the end of *Sherpa* than we expected to be, and Peedom did it with nothing louder than Brice on camera being reasonable, and frightened for his livelihood, and wrong. That is the restraint working. It also costs her something: the paying clients get off lightly, and a director who had spent that long watching them had earned the right to be harder.

So it matters that she is now making a drama. *Tenzing* (2026), with a story written alongside Luke Davies, puts Tenzing Norgay at the centre of the 1953 ascent instead of a step behind Hillary. It is her first narrative feature, and she has been clearing the ground for it since 2006.

## Biography

Jennifer Peedom is an Australian filmmaker and director. Born in Canberra, she studied at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and worked in corporate roles, including as a commodities trader, before entering documentary filmmaking via the ABC series Race Around Oz in 2000.

Her feature documentaries include Solo (2008), Sherpa (2015) and Mountain (2017). Sherpa was filmed during the 2014 Mount Everest avalanche and received a BAFTA nomination. Peedom made her narrative feature debut with Tenzing (2026), for which she is also credited with the story.
