He began his career in theatre, with credits including the title role in *Don Juan* at the New York Shakespeare Festival and Broadway appearances in *Hairspray*. Burns is known for his role as Kirk Morris in the series *Dear John* (1988–1992) and as Wynn Duffy in *Justified* (2010–2015).
