## Fi1m on Jeremy Bobb

> Jeremy Bobb is the man in the suit behind the man you are watching: the administrator, the investigator, the newspaperman who has already worked out what he can live with. He is rarely the lead and rarely the weak link.

In *The Outsider* (2020) he plays Alec Pelley, the investigator the defence hires, and for a while we did not register that anyone was acting. Richard Price writes tired professionals better than anyone, and Bobb plays one the way such men actually behave, doing the job without asking the scene to notice him. That is the trick he has, and it is a harder one than it looks: most actors given a small part in a large ensemble find a way to be seen, and he finds a way not to be.

The career explains it. He spent his twenties on New York stages, a first Broadway understudy in 2007, and by his own account put in years of unpaid work in New York basements before anyone paid him. Screen work came slowly, small parts from 2007 and recurring television from 2013, and then Steven Soderbergh cast him as Herman Barrow, the hospital administrator in *The Knick* (2014–15). Barrow is ambitious and compromised and always slightly in debt to someone, and it is the part that fixed what Bobb would be asked to do for the next decade.

Since then he has been the useful man in other people's series: Stevie in *The Drop* (2014), the frontier newspaperman A.T. Grigg in *Godless* (2017), Mike Kershaw in *Russian Doll* (2019), and the antagonist Gregory Sallinger in *Jessica Jones* (2019). We have not written about those at length and will not judge them here, but the pattern is plain. He is cast as men whose morals bend a little under pressure, and he plays the bend without a flourish, which is why the menace, when a part calls for it, reads as ordinary rather than theatrical.

The comparison to Philip Seymour Hoffman gets made. We would not push it that far on what we have seen; Hoffman could carry a film, and nobody has yet asked Bobb to carry anything. That is the honest criticism of the career so far, and it is a criticism of casting directors more than of him. A man who can make a hired investigator look like he has been doing it for twenty years is being underused if the job is always to stand at the edge of somebody else's scene.

Until that changes, look for him in the second row of any serious American drama, usually in a jacket that does not quite fit. He will not be the reason you started watching. He may well be the reason the scene around him holds.
