## Fi1m on Jeremy Davies

> Jeremy Davies makes nervousness worth watching, with a muttered line or hands that will not keep still. We rate him most highly when a director makes those habits useful, rather than merely giving us another eccentric to recognise.

In *Solaris* (2002), Jeremy Davies's Snow mumbles and flutters his hands. He could be the least frightened person on the station or the most frightened; Davies keeps both possibilities open. We found him unsettling because those small movements make his fear difficult to measure. Steven Soderbergh gets something useful from an actor whose nervous habits might otherwise become a distraction.

His breakthrough lead in David O. Russell's *Spanking the Monkey* (1994) came before the wider notice brought by Steven Spielberg's *Saving Private Ryan* (1998). As Corporal Upham, the battle-shy interpreter, he brings sympathy to a man whose uncertainty could be easy to dismiss. We value Spielberg's film chiefly for its combat sequences and Tom Hanks's strained authority, but Davies gives that ensemble a different kind of unease. The part makes good use of his vulnerability without requiring him to be reassuring.

A role in Lars von Trier's *Dogville* (2003) was followed by substantial television work. He played the troubled physicist Daniel Faraday in *Lost* (2008–2010) and the volatile outlaw Dickie Bennett in *Justified* (2011–2015). There is a danger in repeatedly casting him as damaged or eccentric men: we may start recognising the habits before we have met the character. We would be wary of treating those habits as proof that a performance has depth. In *Solaris*, they work because we cannot decide what they mean.

His later supporting work includes Terrence, the father in *The Black Phone* (2021), and a return in Scott Derrickson's *Black Phone 2* (2025). The sequel gives him more to do, though its grainy dream sequences are more persuasive than its explanations and sermonising. We would not make it the first stop for someone curious about Davies, simply because the larger part sits inside a film we only partly recommend. Start with *Solaris*, where Soderbergh lets the mumbling and the restless hands remain difficult to read.
