## Biography

Jeremy Isaacs is a Scottish television producer and executive. Born in Glasgow in 1932, he was educated at Glasgow Academy and Merton College, Oxford, where he read Classics. He began his career in television at Granada in 1958 before moving to the BBC as editor of Panorama and then to Thames Television as controller of features.

At Thames he produced the landmark 26-part documentary series *The World at War* (1973–74), narrated by Laurence Olivier. He later produced *Ireland: A Television History* (1980) and *A Sense of Freedom* (1981). In 1982 he became the founding chief executive of Channel 4, serving until 1987, and was general director of the Royal Opera House from 1988 to 1996. He was knighted in 1996 for services to broadcasting and the arts.
