## Biography

Jerome Kern was an American composer of musical theatre and film scores. Born in Manhattan, he wrote music for over 100 stage works and numerous Hollywood films across a career spanning more than four decades.

His best-known stage work is the 1927 musical *Show Boat*, with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. Film credits include the score for *Swing Time* (1936), which featured songs such as "A Fine Romance" and the Academy Award-winning "The Way You Look Tonight", both with lyrics by Dorothy Fields. Songs from his shows, including those from *Show Boat*, have been adapted into films in 1936 and 1951.

Kern collaborated with lyricists including Hammerstein, Otto Harbach, Dorothy Fields and Johnny Mercer. He died in 1945.
