## Biography

Jerzy Skolimowski is a Polish film director, screenwriter and actor. Born in Łódź in 1938, he began as a screenwriter on Andrzej Wajda’s *Innocent Sorcerers* (1960) and made his directorial debut with *The Menacing Eye* (1960). His early credits include the screenplay for *Knife in the Water* (1962) and direction of *The Departure* (1967), which won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Skolimowski directed *Deep End* (1971), *The Shout* (1978), *Moonlighting* (1982) and *Essential Killing* (2010). After living in Los Angeles for over twenty years, during which he painted and occasionally acted, he returned to Poland and filmmaking with *Four Nights with Anna* (2008). Later works include *11 Minutes* (2015), *The Palace* (2023) and *EO* (2022), which received the Jury Prize at Cannes and an Academy Award nomination for Best International Feature Film.

He has also acted in films including *Eastern Promises* (2007) as Stepan. In 2016 he received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival.
