## Fi1m on Jesse Armstrong

> Jesse Armstrong writes people who need to believe their own excuses, and makes the effort painfully funny. We rate him highly for the precision of that writing, though the sustained embarrassment and abuse can wear us down.

Mark Corrigan tries to look reasonable while his internal narration tells us how selfish he is being. In *Peep Show* (2003), Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain make that gap between thought and speech painfully funny, with David Mitchell and Robert Webb giving each excuse time to sound plausible. We laughed at Mark and Jeremy's justifications, then felt uneasy about how readily we recognised them. The point-of-view camerawork makes it harder to keep a comfortable distance from either man. We would still advise against several episodes in a row: the embarrassment accumulates.

Armstrong's contribution to *The Thick of It* (2005) belongs to a writing ensemble that includes Simon Blackwell, Tony Roche and Ian Martin. The scripts allow improvisation, and the dialogue sounds untidy enough for the ministerial confusion to feel unplanned. The ensemble gives the comedy a variety that Peter Capaldi's verbal assaults alone could not sustain. The richest exchanges are those in which getting a sentence out only makes matters worse.

*In the Loop* (2009) gives those habits more alarming consequences, as officials let professional ambition and wounded pride shape the prospect of war. Armstrong shares the screenplay credit with director Armando Iannucci, Roche and Blackwell, and its speed is essential to the joke. Nobody has much time to recover their dignity before another insult takes it away. The sharper jokes show precisely how bluster buys a weak official another moment of authority. The trouble comes when the barrage crowds out the people delivering it, a limitation we also find in *The Thick of It*.

Those shared credits matter when considering *Succession* (2018–2023), which Armstrong created and ran as showrunner. That move from established comedy partnerships to leading a series was followed by *Mountainhead* (2025), his directorial debut. He also wrote the television film, a satire about tech billionaires. We would not treat the earlier collaborations as mere preparation: Bain and Iannucci helped make comedies whose small humiliations still give us plenty to recognise. Start with *In the Loop* if there is only an evening to spare, and accept that nobody is going to speak kindly for long.
