## Biography

Jim Bouton (1939–2019) was an American actor, writer and former professional baseball player. Born in Newark, New Jersey, he played in Major League Baseball as a pitcher for teams including the New York Yankees and Seattle Pilots. After retiring from the sport he became known for his 1970 book *Ball Four* and later took acting roles.

Bouton appeared as Terry Lennox in Robert Altman's *The Long Goodbye* (1973). He played the lead role of Jim Barton in the 1976 CBS television series *Ball Four*, adapted from his book, and had a supporting part as a bullpen coach in *How Do You Know* (2010). He died in the Berkshires, Massachusetts, from cerebral amyloid angiopathy.
