Born on 26 August 1909 in Edgerton, Missouri, he died on 26 April 1981 in Northridge, California. He trained at William Jewell College and served in the United States Coast Guard during the Second World War. His first major screen role came in the 1948 film *Winter Meeting*. Davis appeared in numerous westerns and other films, including *The Big Sky* (1952) as Streak, *The Magnificent Seven* (1960), *El Dorado* (1966), *Rio Lobo* (1970), *Big Jake* (1971) and *The Parallax View* (1974).
