## Fi1m on Jim Frohna

> Jim Frohna is a cinematographer first and an episode director second. In both jobs the camera stays close to the people instead of arranging them, which suits Joey Soloway and has made him a fixture of television that wants to look lived in.

In *Transparent* (2014) the camera is nearly always moving and nearly always a little too close. It follows people from the kitchen into the hall instead of waiting for them at the door, and it lets them go slightly soft at the edge of the frame rather than lose them. Lamps look like lamps. Nobody is lit to look better than they would at breakfast. That is Frohna's habit, on that series and on most of what he has shot since: a loose, handheld, documentary way of working, pointed at fiction, so that a scripted scene feels overheard.

He came to it slowly. He started in the 1990s as an electrician and gaffer, moved into commercials by the middle of the 2000s, and did not get a major narrative credit until he shot *Afternoon Delight* (2013) for Joey Soloway. That partnership is the spine of the career. *Transparent* followed, and he stayed with it across its run from 2014 to 2019, shooting the series and directing episodes of it, then did the same double job on *I Love Dick* (2016). Since then he has become a hired hand for other people's prestige television: the second season of *Big Little Lies* (2019) with Andrea Arnold, *The Chair*, *Shrinking* (2023), and the feature *The Idea of You* (2024). Six projects with Soloway, two with Arnold, and a great many rooms that look like somebody actually lives in them.

The closeness is the point, and in *Transparent* it got at us. Those family dinners put us at the table as an extra guest, near enough to be embarrassed by what was said and unable to leave, and while the writing supplies the selfishness, it is the camera that makes us sit through it. Frohna has said of his method, "What I tend to do is read a script and I respond emotionally. How does it make me feel?" That is a franker account of the job than most cinematographers give, and it squares with the results: he lights and moves for how a scene should feel, not how it should look, and on that series the two happened to be the same thing.

There is not much said against him, and in a cinematographer that is not quite a compliment. The ones who get argued about are the ones who impose a look; Frohna does not impose. His style is now more or less the house style of a certain kind of American comedy-drama, warm, unforced, a little untidy, and the risk of that is that it becomes something producers order by the yard. Whether he can do anything else, we have not yet been shown.

Start with *Transparent*, and if the discomfort of being that close to a family is what stays with you, that is him.
