He was born on 4 July 1889 in Paris and died there on 2 July 1958. He appeared in more than a hundred films from 1911, usually in supporting roles. He worked repeatedly with director René Clair during the silent era, including in *The Imaginary Voyage* (1926), *The Italian Straw Hat* (1927) and *Two Timid Souls* (1928). Later credits include *Moulin Rouge* (1952) as Le Père Cotelle and *The Barefoot Contessa* (1954) as Mr Blue. Gérald had an adventurous early life that included time as a cowboy in North America and work in the circus and music hall.
