## Fi1m on Jo Hartley

> Jo Hartley gives small parts enough weight to make us curious about the person beyond the scene. We value her plain, believable acting, though the films have not always given her enough to do.

Jo Hartley makes a small part feel inhabited before the film has supplied much information about it. As Shaun’s mother in Shane Meadows’s *This Is England* (2007), she belongs to a cast whose warmth and humour make the attraction of the skinhead gang understandable. Her strength is making the mother worth attending to while the story follows the boy. It is a good fit for an actor who brings depth to supporting parts without needing much screen time.

Her screen debut had come as Marie in Meadows’s *Dead Man’s Shoes* (2004), a rather less welcoming introduction to film acting. We were frightened by it, chiefly because of Paddy Considine’s watchful fury. The dark humour works, but the abrupt lurches into brutality expose some thin writing, and our recommendation carries that caveat. Both Meadows films suit Hartley’s ability to make ordinary people credible, though neither is a reason to pretend that a gifted supporting actor can repair every weakness in a script.

Television gave her room to continue that work, with three sequels to *This Is England* in which she returned as Shaun’s mother. Later parts include Janette Edwards in *Eddie the Eagle* (2016) and June in Ricky Gervais’s *After Life* (2019–2022). The repeated casting as working-class mothers and resilient women suggests both an appreciation of her strengths and a limit on what she gets asked to do. We would be wary of praising her reliability so warmly that we stop asking for more substantial parts.

*Swede Caroline* (2024), her first leading film role, marks a welcome change in the size of the job. The next useful step would be more of those opportunities, with characters allowed to be difficult as well as dependable. We would like the attention she brings to supporting work to be matched by films prepared to spend more time with her, without assuming that a bigger part necessarily means a better film. Start with *This Is England*, and pay attention to the mother as well as the boy.
