## Fi1m on Joan Allen

> Joan Allen makes composure look difficult, letting us see the effort behind a character’s restraint. We value her ability to make quiet people worth watching, though the parts that ask only for moral authority can make her seem distant.

In *The Ice Storm* (1997), Joan Allen’s Elena Hood has to work to keep her face composed. Allen lets us notice the effort without turning it into a display of suffering. We were moved by her because holding herself together looked so difficult, and because the performance never asked for pity. In a drama full of dissatisfied people behaving foolishly, she gives us someone to care about without requiring us to excuse the others.

Her mid-1990s screen breakthrough brought Pat Nixon in *Nixon* (1995) and Elizabeth Proctor in *The Crucible* (1996), followed by Elena. The frequent casting as wives and moral centres risked making her the person who supplied decency while everyone else got to be difficult. *Pleasantville* (1998) offered a different use for her restraint through Betty Parker’s gradual awakening. In *The Contender* (2000), her authority supported a leading role.

Ang Lee gets particularly good work from her in *The Ice Storm* by giving Elena room within the ensemble. The film’s patience matters: Allen can make composure look strenuous without having to compete for our attention. There is a risk that such reticence will seem remote, but we do not find Elena cold; the strain is there to be seen. Lee is less confident when he presses the weather into explaining what the actors have already made clear. Allen’s performance is one reason that excess does not undo the film.

The shift into the *Bourne* series (2004–2012) put her in mainstream films, while Nancy in *Room* (2015) continued the supporting dramatic work. We would not measure that career by the size of the part. Her value in Lee’s ensemble is precisely that she can make one person’s unhappiness matter without demanding that the film stop for her. The caveat is that dependable casting can give an actor too little to do. Start with *The Ice Storm*, and watch how much work it takes Elena to look calm.
