## Fi1m on Joanna Page

> Joanna Page gives Stacey Shipman's gentleness enough expression to make us care. We value her warmth and natural delivery, though *Gavin & Stacey* sometimes leaves her relying on likeability while the supporting characters get the sharper writing.

In *Gavin & Stacey* (2007), Joanna Page gives the quieter exchanges enough expression to keep Stacey Shipman from disappearing beside the louder characters. Mathew Horne keeps Gavin's reactions modest, while Page allows more of what Stacey feels to show. We warmed to her in those scenes because her openness keeps the couple's gentleness from becoming bland. Her ease with everyday dialogue is well suited to a comedy in which being pleasant company matters, even when somebody else gets the laugh.

Before that breakthrough, her screen work included small parts in *From Hell* (2001) and Richard Curtis's *Love Actually* (2003). Later roles include Queen Elizabeth the First in *Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor* (2013) and Angela Davies in the Welsh-set comedy-drama *Dream Horse* (2021). Those credits reach beyond the domestic settings with which she is frequently associated. But Stacey remains the part on which we would base a recommendation, with a reservation about how she is written.

Ruth Jones and James Corden, the programme's co-creators and her co-stars, give their own characters firmer comic rhythms than they give the central pair. Page brings life to the softer writing, but there are exchanges in which she and Horne seem to be waiting for someone to interrupt. Their smoothness becomes a limitation when the people around them are allowed more awkwardness. Page is more expressive than Horne, but neither actor can make simple likeability carry every scene.

Her frequent casting as relatable, sometimes flustered Welsh women is understandable; natural delivery suits domestic and ensemble comedy. In Stacey, she offers a reason to stay with the central couple between the bigger comic interruptions, even when their dialogue is less rewarding. That should not become an excuse to keep giving her agreeable people and leaving the difficult exchanges to somebody else. We would welcome a part that lets her cause more of the awkwardness herself.
