She was born on 18 March 1916 in Fort Worth, Texas, studied voice and acting at Columbia University and graduated from the Pasadena Playhouse. Gilbert began her career as a stage actress in the mid-1930s and appeared in films from 1937, often in supporting parts. Her work was interrupted for over a decade by the Hollywood blacklist following her testimony before HUAC. She returned to television in 1965 and to film in 1969 as the Large Woman in *Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid*.
