## Biography

Joe Adams was an American actor, disc jockey and talent manager. He appeared as Husky Miller in the 1954 film *Carmen Jones* and had an uncredited role as a psychiatrist in *The Manchurian Candidate* (1962). Other film credits include *Disc Jockey* (1951) and *Ballad in Blue* (1965).

Adams began his career in radio and television in Los Angeles, hosting programmes that featured music and variety acts. He later managed singer Ray Charles for more than four decades. In 1955 he received a Golden Globe Award for New Star of the Year – Actor, becoming the first African American to win the award.

On stage he played Joe Nashua in the Broadway musical *Jamaica* (1957). He was born in Los Angeles and died there in 2018.
