Joe Gores was an American mystery writer. He contributed scripts to the television series *Kojak* (1973), among them the episode 'No Immunity for Murder' (1975), which won an Edgar Award for Best TV Series Segment.

Born Joseph Nicholas Gores on 25 December 1931 in Rochester, Minnesota, he earned a bachelor's degree in English literature from the University of Notre Dame in 1953 and a master's from Stanford University in 1961. He worked for twelve years as a private investigator in San Francisco, an experience that shaped his fiction, particularly the DKA series about a repossession agency.

Gores won three Edgar Awards in three categories and also received the Maltese Falcon Award. His novels include *A Time of Predators* (1969) and *Hammett* (1975), the latter adapted into a 1982 film. He wrote episodes for series including *Magnum, P.I.* (1980) and *T. J. Hooker* (1982). He died on 10 January 2011 in California.
