## Biography

Joe Layton (3 May 1931 – 5 May 1994) was an American choreographer, director and producer. Born Joseph Lichtman in Brooklyn, New York, he began his career as a dancer before concentrating on musical staging. He won Tony Awards for Best Choreography for the Broadway productions *No Strings* (1962) and *George M!* (1968), and an Emmy Award for his work on the Barbra Streisand television special *My Name Is Barbra* (1965).

Layton directed and produced numerous television specials and collaborated on Broadway shows including *Barnum*. In film, he was executive producer and creator of the musical sequences for *Annie* (1982), and directed the concert film *Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip* (1982). He also contributed choreography to *Thoroughly Modern Millie* (1967) and *For the Boys* (1991).
