Born in Lohne, Germany, Schmölling trained as a classical musician, studying piano from the age of eight and later the pipe organ. He graduated with a degree in sound engineering in 1978 and worked in theatre sound at the Schaubühne am Halleschen Ufer in Berlin before joining Tangerine Dream. His film credits as a member of the group include *Thief* (1981), *Risky Business* (1983), *The Keep* (1983), *Firestarter* (1984) and *Legend* (1985).
