## Biography

John Banner (also credited as Johann Banner) was an Austrian-born American actor. Born on 28 January 1910 in Stanislau, Galicia, Austria-Hungary (now Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine), he fled Austria in 1938 as a Jewish refugee following the Anschluss and emigrated to the United States.

He appeared in numerous films and television series, often in supporting roles as German or European characters. Banner is best known for portraying Sergeant Hans Schultz in the CBS sitcom Hogan's Heroes (1965–1971). Other credits include uncredited roles in King Solomon's Mines (1950) and One, Two, Three (1961), as well as appearances in The Young Lions (1958), 36 Hours (1964) and episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents and Perry Mason.

Banner died on 28 January 1973 in Vienna, Austria.
