## Biography

John Beal (born James Alexander Bliedung, 13 August 1909 – 26 April 1997) was an American actor. He was born in Joplin, Missouri, and studied at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania before beginning his career in theatre.

Beal made his Broadway debut in the early 1930s and appeared in films from 1933, including *Another Language* (1933) and opposite Katharine Hepburn in *The Little Minister* (1934). He is noted for his role as Marius in *Les Misérables* (1935). He served in the US Army Air Forces during the Second World War, working in its motion picture unit, and later had supporting roles in films such as *Twelve Angry Men* (1954) and *The Firm* (1993), as well as television appearances including *Kojak* and *The Waltons*.

Beal was married to actress Helen Craig from 1934 until her death in 1986.
