## Biography

John Bird (1936–2022) was an English actor, satirist, writer and director. Born in Bulwell, Nottingham, he studied at King's College, Cambridge, where he was involved with the Footlights dramatic club. He began his career in the 1960s television satire boom, appearing in *That Was the Week That Was* and forming a long partnership with John Fortune.

Bird appeared in numerous films and television series over more than five decades. His credits include *Jabberwocky* (1977), *The Seven-Per-Cent Solution* (1976), *Yes, Prime Minister* (1986) and *A Very Peculiar Practice* (1986–88), in which he played Vice-Chancellor Ernest Hemmingway. He was also known for his work with Rory Bremner in the sketch series *Bremner, Bird and Fortune* (1993–2010). He received two BAFTA awards.
