## Biography

John Maxwell Brownjohn (11 April 1929 – 6 January 2020) was a British literary translator and screenwriter. He translated more than 160 books from German, French and other languages, winning the Schlegel-Tieck Prize three times and the Helen and Kurt Wolff Prize once.

Brownjohn collaborated with director Roman Polanski on several screenplays, including *Tess* (1979), *Pirates* (1986), *Bitter Moon* (1992) and *The Ninth Gate* (1999). He also provided English translation for *The Name of the Rose* (1986) and dialogue work on *The Pianist* (2002). He studied classics at Lincoln College, Oxford.
