## Biography

John Bruce (1938–2026) was a British television director. After training at RADA and graduating in 1964, he began his career as an actor before joining the BBC as an assistant floor manager. He worked as a production assistant on productions including *The Wednesday Play* and *Play for Today*, and began directing in 1974.

He directed episodes of numerous series and serials for the BBC, ITV and Channel 4, including *Z-Cars* (1962), *Play for Today* (1970), *Agatha Christie's Poirot* (1989), *Tales of the Unexpected*, *The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes*, *EastEnders*, *Casualty* and *The Bill*. He received International Emmy nominations for *The Reason of Things* (1981) and *The Woman in White* (1982), and served as chair of the Directors Guild of Great Britain from 1994 to 1997.
