## Biography

John Carter (1922–2018) was an American film editor. He began his career in television, rising through the ranks at CBS on *The Ed Sullivan Show* and becoming the first African-American film editor employed by network television in New York. For the final four of his twelve years there, he served as supervising film editor for the documentary unit *Eye on New York*.

In 1968 Carter left CBS to establish his own company, John Carter Associates. His feature credits include *Paper Lion* (1968), *King: A Filmed Record…Montgomery to Memphis* (1970), *Taking Off* (1971) — for which he received a BAFTA nomination — and *The Heartbreak Kid* (1972). He was the first African-American member of the American Cinema Editors and edited more than fifty feature films over his career, among them *Men of Honor* (2000), *Friday* (1995) and *Barbershop* (2002).
