He trained at Ottershaw School and worked briefly as an estate agent before beginning his acting career in the 1960s. He appeared in numerous stage productions, including with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, and had early television roles in series such as Z-Cars and Doctor Who. Challis is best known for playing the second-hand car dealer Aubrey "Boycie" Boyce in the BBC sitcom Only Fools and Horses (1981–2003) and its spin-off The Green Green Grass (2005–2009). He also appeared as the Maintenance Man in Ever Decreasing Circles (1984) and later as Monty Staines in Benidorm (2015–2018).
