John Collier was a British novelist, poet and screenwriter. Born in London, he was privately educated by his novelist uncle Vincent Collier and published poetry by the age of twenty. He moved to Hollywood in 1935 under contract to RKO and later became an American citizen.

Collier was best known for his macabre short stories with twist endings, many first published in The New Yorker. Collections include Fancies and Goodnights (1951), which won the International Fantasy Award. His screenwriting credits include Sylvia Scarlett (1935), Deception (1946) and The War Lord (1965). Stories were adapted for Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955) and The Twilight Zone (1959), for which he wrote one episode.
