## Biography

John Conte was an American actor who worked in film, television and on stage. Born in Palmer, Massachusetts, he moved to Los Angeles as a child and trained at the Pasadena Playhouse after high school. He began in radio before appearing on Broadway in musicals including *Allegro* (1947) and *Carousel* (1945 revival and 1954).

His film roles include Prince Ramo in *Lost in a Harem* (1944) and Drunky in *The Man with the Golden Arm* (1955). He appeared in guest roles on *Perry Mason* (1960–1965) and played Ed Ellis in *The Carpetbaggers* (1964). Conte hosted *Matinee Theater* and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. In the 1960s he largely retired from acting and co-founded the television station KMIR-TV in Palm Desert, California, with his third wife.
