John D. Hancock (born 12 February 1939) is an American stage and film director, producer and writer. He graduated from Harvard University and began his career in theatre, directing Off-Broadway productions including Bertolt Brecht's *Man Equals Man* and winning an Obie Award for his 1968 staging of *A Midsummer Night's Dream*.

Hancock is best known for directing the 1973 sports drama *Bang the Drum Slowly*, starring Robert De Niro and Michael Moriarty. His other feature credits include *Let's Scare Jessica to Death* (1971), *Baby Blue Marine* (1976), *California Dreaming* (1979), *Weeds* (1987) and *Prancer* (1989). He also directed episodes of the television series *Hill Street Blues* (1985) and *The Twilight Zone* (1985).
