## Biography

John Dair (3 March 1933 – 25 November 2005) was a Scottish actor. Born in Dundee, he lived for many years in London. He is best known for playing Harry Grout’s bodyguard Crusher in the BBC sitcom *Porridge* (1974) and the 1979 film adaptation (as Samson), and for the role of Charlie Dawson in the drama series *Our Friends in the North* (1996).

Before acting, Dair worked as a crane and bulldozer driver on building sites and later as a singer. He was offered his *Porridge* part while performing at the Lyceum Theatre in London. His film credits include Big John in *Yellowbeard* (1983), Vinnie Ricorso in *Batman* (1989), a role in *Chicago Joe and the Showgirl* (1990), Derek in *Hear My Song* (1991), Macleish in *Loch Ness* (1996) and a part in *Captain Jack* (1999).

He also appeared in the music videos for Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s “Relax” and “Two Tribes”, and in the 1985 Levi’s jeans advertisement featuring Nick Kamen.
