Between 1941 and 1988 he appeared in over 260 productions. Earlier in his career he worked as an assistant animator at Walt Disney Studios on features including *Fantasia* (1940) and *Bambi* (1942), and later as a radio announcer, news editor and disc jockey. He played Claude Tobin in the 1958 Western *Man of the West*. Other film roles include Pat Garrett in *The Left-Handed Gun* (1958), Henry Luce in *The Right Stuff* (1983) and the judge in *Jagged Edge* (1985).
