## Fi1m on John DiMaggio

> A stand-up's timing in a robot's throat. John DiMaggio's Bender, the drinking, thieving bending unit of *Futurama*, gets the largest share of the good lines, and the gravel he found for it has kept him in work as bruisers, kings and one cheerful dog.

Bender drinks, steals and regards the humans around him as furniture, and none of it ever costs him anything. John DiMaggio plays him gravelly and gruff, and he gives the insults the timing of a man who used to deliver them for a living. He did. DiMaggio came up in New York stand-up in the 1990s as half of a double act called Red Johnny and the Round Guy, and moved into voice work around 1995. You can hear the club in Bender: the lines land because he waits for them.

*Futurama* (1999) made him. Billy West plays four principal parts on that show and DiMaggio plays one, and his is the one that gets the largest share of the good lines, which tells you what the voice is worth. Since then he has mostly been hired to be big and rough. He is Marcus Fenix, the soldier at the front of the *Gears of War* games from 2006, and King Zøg in *Disenchantment* (2018), his third project with Matt Groening. The exception is Jake the Dog in Pendleton Ward's *Adventure Time* (2010), a stretching, shape-changing dog who is kind and easily pleased. Same gravel, opposite temperament, and it is the part that stops anyone calling him a one-trick act.

What he does that other voice actors do not is refuse to soften. Bender never wants to be liked and DiMaggio never asks us to like him, and we laughed at the robot's contempt for his crewmates longer than we should have, because the voice never once tips into apology. He has said that voice acting is "acting just with your hands and feet tied behind your back", and you can hear the body in it. The insults arrive as if a shoulder had been put behind them.

The caveat is the one that comes with any voice this recognisable. Once you know it, you hear DiMaggio before you hear the character, and it takes a part as unlike Bender as Jake to make you forget. He will go on being hired to growl. On the evidence of the dog, he should be hired now and then to be pleasant.
