## Fi1m on John Doman

> John Doman’s deep voice and imposing presence give police commanders and crime bosses weight. He brings nuance to powerful supporting figures, though frequent typecasting keeps him returning to similar parts.

John Doman’s deep voice makes him easy to accept as the man in charge, and his sternness discourages further enquiries. As William Rawls in *The Wire* (2002), he plays an ambitious, uncompromising police commander in a programme willing to spend time on how a department works. It was his breakthrough, and it remains our first recommendation for his work. We were gripped by its departmental politics, because disputes within the institution were given the weight other programmes reserve for gunfire. Doman makes that emphasis credible: we believe this man has authority, even when we have no wish to be on the receiving end of it.

*Blue Valentine* (2010) gives him a smaller, domestic part as Jerry, the father in Derek Cianfrance’s marriage drama. Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams carry the film, making the early happiness count so that the resentment hurts. The repeated switches between those periods become predictable, though not enough to undo the performances. We recommend it with that reservation, but it is a supporting credit in Doman’s work rather than the place to begin assessing what he can do.

Later television parts return him to positions of power. He takes the lead as Rodrigo Borgia, the corrupt Renaissance pope, in *Borgia* (2011), then plays crime boss Carmine Falcone in *Gotham* (2014). The settings change; the need for an actor who can make power convincing does not. Those roles make sense for him, but they also make the concern about typecasting easy to understand.

His repeated guest appearances across the *Law & Order* programmes fit the same casting pattern. There is little point objecting to that merely because we recognise the type. He needs parts that ask for more than the voice and the imposing presence. Otherwise, we risk knowing what he is there to do before he has done it. Start with Rawls, and a programme that takes his department as seriously as the crimes it investigates.
