## Biography

John Emerson (born Clifton Paden; 29 May 1874 – 7 March 1956) was an American writer, director, producer and stage actor. Born in Sandusky, Ohio, he began his career performing and directing on Broadway before entering silent films around 1912.

He directed and wrote a series of comedies for Douglas Fairbanks and collaborated extensively with his wife, the screenwriter Anita Loos, whom he married in 1919. The pair worked jointly on scenarios and later as producers; Emerson's producer credits include *San Francisco* (1936) and *Saratoga* (1937). He also served as president of the Actors' Equity Association from 1919 to 1928.
