## Fi1m on John G. Avildsen

> At his best, John G. Avildsen gave an underdog time to be awkward before asking us to cheer. We recommend *Rocky* for that patience, while recognising how readily his inspirational stories could settle into formula.

In the ice-rink scene in *Rocky* (1976), John G. Avildsen lets Sylvester Stallone and Talia Shire make an awkward attempt at company without tidying it into easy charm. Shire’s Adrian gives Stallone someone to respond to, and Avildsen leaves us time to notice her. We were moved by their difficulty finding ease with each other, because he treats that effort as worth our attention. It is the clearest reason to value his direction: he makes conversation matter in a film whose central business is boxing.

Before that breakthrough came *Joe* (1970) and *Save the Tiger* (1973), but perseverance and mentorship became his most recognisable subjects. *The Karate Kid* (1984) carried the underdog story into another series, and he directed its first three films between 1984 and 1989. He returned to the boxing series with *Rocky V* (1990). The danger in returning to these stories is plain enough: encouragement can become routine, and Avildsen’s films have sometimes been criticised for their sentimentality and formula.

In *Rocky*, the surroundings help prevent that. Cinematographer James Crabe gives the streets and gym a rough, ordinary appearance, while production designer William J. Cassidy makes the gym look used rather than arranged to illustrate hardship. Avildsen spends time in these places, letting everyday discomfort count for something before the larger emotional appeals arrive. We believe in the effort because the people have somewhere credible to make it, and because the director takes their embarrassment seriously.

His generosity is less evenly distributed among the supporting characters. Stallone’s screenplay gives its star too much space, leaving Burt Young’s Paulie and Burgess Meredith’s Mickey with less room than they deserve. Avildsen gets life from both, but patient direction cannot give them scenes the writing has withheld. That reservation matters without cancelling the pleasure of a film which understands how much confidence an ordinary encounter can require. Start with *Rocky* for Stallone and Shire together, rather than simply for the promise of a fight.
