## Biography

John Gorrie (born John Sumner Gorrie, 11 August 1932) is an English television director and screenwriter. He began his career as an actor before joining the BBC as an assistant floor manager. In early 1963 he completed the BBC's directors' course, after which his first directing assignments were on the soap opera *Compact* and the anthology series *Suspense*.

Gorrie directed the *Doctor Who* serial *The Keys of Marinus* (1964). He went on to direct episodes of *Out of the Unknown*, *Play for Today*, *Tales of the Unexpected* (1979–1988) and *Coronation Street* (1994). He also directed and co-wrote episodes of the historical series *Edward the Seventh* (1975) and *Lillie* (1978), and helmed two productions for the *BBC Television Shakespeare* project: *Twelfth Night* (1980) and *The Tempest* (1980). He won a BAFTA Award for his work.
