## Biography

John Graysmark (26 March 1935 – 10 October 2010) was a British production designer and art director. He began his career in the film industry in the mid-1950s as a draughtsman at MGM's British studios, following work in architecture after attending a specialist building school. His father had been a construction co-ordinator at Elstree Studios.

Over a career spanning nearly five decades, Graysmark contributed to numerous major productions, initially in the art department on films such as *Lawrence of Arabia* (1962), *The Guns of Navarone* (1961) and *2001: A Space Odyssey* (1968). He later served as production designer on *Ragtime* (1981), *The Bounty* (1984), *Gorillas in the Mist* (1988), *Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves* (1991), *Courage Under Fire* (1996) and others. He received Academy Award nominations for Best Art Direction on *Young Winston* (1972) and *Ragtime* (1981).
