John Guare is an American playwright and screenwriter. Born in New York City on 5 February 1938, he was educated at Georgetown University and Yale University, where he received an MFA in 1963.

Guare is known for his plays *The House of Blue Leaves* (1971) and *Six Degrees of Separation* (1990). He wrote the screenplay for the film *Atlantic City* (1980), directed by Louis Malle, and adapted his own play for the 1993 screen version of *Six Degrees of Separation*. He has received an Academy Award nomination for the *Atlantic City* screenplay, as well as Tony and Obie awards for his stage work.
