## Biography

John Hoyt was an American actor. Born John McArthur Hoysradt, he made his Broadway debut in 1931 and performed with the Mercury Theatre from 1937, including as Decius Brutus in Orson Welles's stage production of *Caesar*.

Hoyt shortened his surname in 1945 before his film debut in *O.S.S.* (1946). He appeared in numerous films, including *When Worlds Collide* (1951), *Julius Caesar* (1953, reprising Decius Brutus), *Blackboard Jungle* (1955), *Spartacus* (1960) and *Cleopatra* (1963). He also had extensive television work, with guest roles in series such as *The Twilight Zone*, *The Outer Limits* and the pilot episode of *Star Trek* as Dr Philip Boyce, and a regular role in *Gimme a Break!* (1981–87). He was educated at the Hotchkiss School and Yale University, where he earned bachelor's and master's degrees, and taught history at the Groton School for two years.
