## Biography

John Hubley was an American animation director, art director, producer and writer. Born on 21 May 1914 in Marinette, Wisconsin, he died on 21 February 1977 in New Haven, Connecticut.

He began his career at Walt Disney Productions, contributing to *Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs* (1938). He later worked at United Productions of America (UPA), where he co-created the character Mr. Magoo and directed *Gerald McBoing-Boing* (1950). In 1955 he established Storyboard Studios (later Hubley Studio) with his wife Faith Hubley.

Hubley directed shorts including *Moonbird* (1959) and *The Hole* (1962), both Academy Award winners. He was the original director of *Watership Down* (1978) before disagreements led to his departure; his work remains in the opening sequence. He was blacklisted in the 1950s.
