## Biography

John Irving is an American-Canadian novelist and screenwriter. He was born on 2 March 1942 in Exeter, New Hampshire, and is best known for his novels *The World According to Garp* (1978) and *The Cider House Rules* (1985).

Irving wrote the screenplay for the 1999 film adaptation of *The Cider House Rules*, directed by Lasse Hallström, for which he received the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Several of his other novels, including *The World According to Garp* (1982), *The Hotel New Hampshire* (1984), *Simon Birch* (1998) and *The Door in the Floor* (2004), have also been adapted for the screen.
