John Kander is an American composer born on 18 March 1927 in Kansas City, Missouri. He is best known for his long collaboration with lyricist Fred Ebb on Broadway musicals including *Cabaret* (1966) and *Chicago* (1975).

Kander has also composed for films, including the score adaptation for *Kramer vs. Kramer* (1979), *New York, New York* (1977) and *Places in the Heart* (1984). He trained at Oberlin College and Columbia University and began his career arranging dance music for shows such as *Gypsy* before his Broadway debut.
