## Biography

John McNamara is an American writer, producer, showrunner and television creator. Born on 2 April 1962 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, he attended the University of Michigan and New York University.

He wrote the screenplay for and co-produced the 2015 biographical film *Trumbo*, directed by Jay Roach. McNamara created the NBC series *Aquarius* (2015–2016) and co-created the Syfy series *The Magicians* (2015–2020). Earlier credits include writing and producing on *Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman* (1993–1997) and *The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.* (1993–1994).

His play *Present Tense* won the first Young Playwrights competition and was produced off-Broadway. *Trumbo* received a Writers Guild of America nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, and McNamara was awarded the WGAW Paul Selvin Award in 2016.
