## Biography

John Meredyth Lucas (1919–2002) was an American writer, director and producer who worked primarily in television. The son of screenwriter Bess Meredyth and actor-director Wilfred Lucas, and the adopted son of director Michael Curtiz, he began his career as an apprentice script clerk at Warner Bros. before becoming a screenwriter in 1950 and moving into television in 1953.

He is best known for his contributions to *Star Trek* (1966), where he wrote four episodes including "The Changeling" (1967) and "Patterns of Force" (1968), directed three including "The Ultimate Computer" (1968) and "Elaan of Troyius" (1968) — the only episode of the original series directed by its writer — and served as producer for much of the second season. He was also co-producer on *The Fugitive* (1963) and worked as writer, director or producer on series including *Ben Casey*, *Mannix*, *Insight*, *Night Gallery* and *The Six Million Dollar Man* (1974). He received two Emmy Award nominations for his work on *Insight*.
