## Fi1m on John Musker

> John Musker makes animated musicals whose comedy can move faster than their romances. With Ron Clements, he gives songs and performers room to flourish; we rate the results most highly when the characters stop explaining themselves.

In *Aladdin* (1992), the Genie interrupts a straightforward story, and the film has the good sense to let him. John Musker and Ron Clements give Robin Williams's voice animation elastic enough to keep pace with it. We laughed because the drawings never seem to be waiting for the comedian to finish. That willingness to let a performer disrupt the storytelling is a strength, and the simple story can withstand it. We recommend Musker most readily for that combination of musical confidence and unruly comedy.

His directing partnership with Clements began with *The Great Mouse Detective* (1986), before *The Little Mermaid* (1989) established musical storytelling as a central part of their work. Lyricist and story contributor Howard Ashman was an important early collaborator, helping develop the Broadway-style sequences. Songs belong inside the storytelling here, which is why the warmth they bring to *Aladdin* matters as much as their entertainment. *Hercules* (1997) subsequently took their comedy into mythology.

The weakness is the writing for the lovers in *Aladdin*. Clements, Musker, Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio share the screenplay credit, and give Aladdin and Jasmine too much dialogue about what they ought to learn. Scott Weinger and Linda Larkin bring a likeable directness to the speaking roles, but the exchanges leave little for us to discover. We know what the couple want without feeling much urgency about their getting it. Beside the Genie, their romance feels dutiful, and we wish the writing trusted their desires without so much explanation.

The later films changed the tools: *The Princess and the Frog* (2009) returned to hand-drawn animation, while *Moana* (2016) was the team's first computer-animated feature. Expressive character work survived that move, a useful reminder that Musker's interests are not confined to a particular technique. After leaving Disney in 2018, he released the independent short *I'm Hip* (2023). Start with *Aladdin*, and allow the lovers a little patience; they have an unusually difficult supporting act to follow.
