## Fi1m on John Ortiz

> John Ortiz gives supporting characters worries of their own, even when the scene belongs to somebody else. We rate him most highly when the writing lets that unease become funny, as it does in *American Fiction*.

In *American Fiction* (2023), John Ortiz has the unpromising job of passing on offers over the phone. As Arthur, Monk’s agent, he lets his alarm rise as the prank becomes a commercial prospect, until relaying good news becomes a cause for anxiety. We laughed because he makes the agent’s predicament so clear: someone has to handle the business, however absurd it gets. This is where we particularly value Ortiz, making a supporting character’s immediate worries interesting enough to follow for their own sake.

The crime films could make his work look narrower than it is. From Guajiro in *Carlito’s Way* (1993) to Javier J. Rivera in Ridley Scott’s *American Gangster* (2007), Ortiz became a familiar supporting presence in stories about people on either side of the law. There is an obvious risk of repetition in that casting. His work with the LAByrinth ensemble and collaborators Philip Seymour Hoffman and Stephen Adly Guirgis gives a fuller picture. His layered performance as Clyde in *Jack Goes Boating* (2010) is a useful counterweight to the succession of crime-film parts.

In *Silver Linings Playbook* (2012), his Ronnie belongs to another recurring kind of part: the friend. David O. Russell’s argumentative romance needs its supporting actors to make the company around Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence feel worth knowing. Ortiz brings the part an approachable warmth, though the two leads are the main reason we recommend the film. The cast earns affection; the writing grows too reassuring about the problems it has raised.

Cord Jefferson finds a sharper use for him in *American Fiction*, where Arthur has a job to do and increasingly good reasons to be nervous about doing it. Ortiz keeps that worry clear without interrupting the publishing satire, the strongest stretch of a film whose family drama never quite fits alongside it. We would like to see more scripts give him comic business as precise as those phone calls.

## Biography

John Ortiz is an American actor born on 23 May 1968. He began his career in theatre as a co-founder of the LAByrinth Theater Company in New York and later served as one of its artistic directors alongside Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Ortiz is known for film roles including Arturo Braga in *Fast & Furious* (2009) and *Fast & Furious 6* (2013), Ronnie in *Silver Linings Playbook* (2012), and Arthur in *American Fiction* (2023). He received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Supporting Male for his performance as Clyde in *Jack Goes Boating* (2010). He has also appeared in *American Gangster* (2007) and other films and television series.
