## Biography

John Phillips (1935–2001) was an American musician, singer and songwriter, best known as the leader of the vocal group the Mamas & the Papas. He wrote the majority of the group's material and also composed "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)" for Scott McKenzie.

Phillips organised the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. In film, he coordinated and contributed original music to *The Man Who Fell to Earth* (1976), directed by Nicolas Roeg. He appeared as an actor in the segment "Terror Over Hollywood" of *Torture Garden* (1967).
