Born on 8 December 1946 in Los Angeles, he is the son of pianist Arthur Rubinstein. He made his Broadway debut in 1972 in the musical *Pippin*, for which he received a Theatre World Award. In 1980 he won the Tony Award, Drama Desk Award and other honours for his performance in *Children of a Lesser God*. Rubinstein's film credits include *21 Grams* (2003), in which he played a gynaecologist, and *Red Dragon* (2002).
